About this deal

By 18 I was a regular drinker with my mom at bars and working in some pretty shady places, doing some pretty horrific things all because this was my norm. As they arrive home, they are exactly mid-way through the most powerful phase of the withdrawal process. Alcohol withdrawal is so subtle that we are unable to identify the symptoms unless we are aware of what to look for. Withdrawal from booze feels like a general feeling of unease. To the everyday person, it may feel a little like stress or anxiety. Is it Really Stress? My view is that if something helps a person stop or reduce their drinking, then that method is right for them. No method will ever work for everybody. I am put off, however, by a person blaming a substance which many people can use safely. I think it is important to recognise that those who get into trouble have a different biological make-up and that is the cause, rather than alcohol itself. I have not had a single sip of poison since the night before I found that book. I have zero desire for it. I will never again partake in the Norm of alcohol! All these "willpower" based attempts to stop drinking failed. Slowly, he discovered the truth about alcohol addiction and one by one, all the lies he had previously believed started to fall apart. For the first time, he noticed that he genuinely didn't want to drink anymore.

I know the road will be different now for me, for my children, for the new people in my life. I know it will be weeks before the chemistry in my brain is corrected and years for the damage (whatever damage there is) to my liver to be corrected.

Some never drank because of religious or personal convictions…the list goes on, but the biggest takeaway is more people do not drink than we realize! Although it seemed like everyone was drinking, obviously not everyone was. I find that now that I am open and honest about my sobriety, I run into others who also do not drink or never drank….and there are way more people than I originally realized!

The book was okay in parts and resonated at some points, however the real help you need is once you have stopped drinking not helping you stop. The book offered little practical suggestions on how you ensure you continue not to drink and seemed to be aimed at just driving income for the author by way of you joining an expensive membership and purchasing hypnotic recordings

I got up and went to the bottle of vodka that was hidden in my drawer and opened it on the way to the sink. I purposefully smelled the vodka thinking “one last smell, then down the sink it goes!” I liked the smell of vodka- or at least told myself I did. Because of the hardwiring, you have constructed in your brain and your overactive hypothalamus. You may never achieve total zero, but every day you don’t drink, the base state of withdrawal drops a little further.
